Breast reduction, also known as reduction mammoplasty, is a surgical procedure to reduce the size and weight of large breasts. The procedure involves removing excess breast tissue, skin, and fat to achieve a more proportional breast size. Additional procedures, such as liposuction of the chest wall, may be performed simultaneously to create a smooth contour under the arms. As a female plastic surgeon, Dr. Haley Augustine understands the feelings and concerns women may have toward their breasts. She recommends breast reduction to help women achieve their desired size and comfort.
Good candidates for breast reduction are often women who experience physical discomfort, such as back, neck or shoulder pain, due to oversized breasts. They may have difficulty finding clothes that fit well and may feel their physical activity is limited because of their breast size. Individuals who experience skin irritation under the breastfold may also benefit from the procedure. Ideal candidates are in good health, non-smokers, and have realistic expectations of the procedure results.
Dr. Haley Augustine provides an empathetic and gentle approach. As a female surgeon and mother of two, she is patient and understands the unique challenges many women face regarding their bodies.

During the first few days after the procedure, patients may experience pain, swelling, and bruising in the breast area. Patients will typically need to wear a surgical brassier for 6 weeks after surgery to reduce swelling and support the breasts during the healing process. The recovery time after a breast reduction can vary depending on overall fitness, health, and extent of breast tissue removed, as well as combined procedures such as liposuction. Most patients can return to work and light activities within one to two weeks, but more strenuous physical activities should be avoided for 6 weeks.
The results of a breast reduction are noticeable immediately after the procedure. Still, they will become more defined over the next few weeks as swelling decreases and your new breast shape begins to settle. The final results will continue to improve over the following months. Reducing the size and enhancing the shape of your breasts will relieve symptoms such as back and neck pain, skin irritation, and difficulty exercising while also improving self-confidence and body image.

Breasts may partially regrow after breast reduction surgery. The amount of regrowth can vary depending on several factors, including the amount of breast tissue removed, the patient’s age, weight fluctuations, and hormonal changes, including pregnancy. Breast reduction surgery may also impact the future ability to breastfeed.
