What is an eyelid lift?

Blepharoplasty, or eyelid lift, is a cosmetic surgery that removes excess skin and sometimes fat from the upper and/or lower eyelids to give them a more youthful, rested, and refreshed appearance. The procedure is typically done on an outpatient basis under local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia. It involves making small incisions along the eyelids’ natural creases to minimize visible scarring. The surgeon will then remove the excess tissue and may also reposition or tighten the remaining tissue to improve the overall contour and appearance of the eyelids.

  • Treatment time: 1 – 3 hours
  • Anesthesia: General anesthesia or local anesthesia with sedation
  • Recovery time: 2 – 4 weeks
  • ‍Cost Starting From: $4,000 – $8,500 CAD

Who is a good candidate for eyelid lift?

A good candidate for an eyelid lift, or blepharoplasty, is someone with sagging or drooping eyelids that make them appear tired or older than they actually are. This procedure is particularly beneficial for people whose vision is impaired by excess skin on the upper eyelids. Patients unhappy with puffiness or bags under the eyes may also be good candidates. Ideally, candidates are in good health, non-smokers, and have realistic expectations of the procedure’s results.

What’s the difference between an upper and lower eyelid lift?

Upper eyelid lift

Upper eyelid lift, also known as upper blepharoplasty, involves removing excess skin and potentially fat from the upper eyelids. This surgery can address droopy eyelids, sagging skin, and wrinkles. The surgeon makes an incision in the upper eyelid’s natural crease, removes the excess skin and fat, and then sutures the incision closed. The result is a more refreshed and youthful appearance of the upper eyelids.

Lower eyelid surgery

Lower eyelid surgery, also known as lower blepharoplasty, targets bags and wrinkles under the eyes. The surgeon makes an incision just below the lash line or inside the lower eyelid, then removes the bulging under the eye by repositioning fat and removing excess skin if necessary to create a smoother, more youthful look. The result is reduced under-eye bags and a more rested, rejuvenated appearance.

Upper and lower eyelid lifts can be performed alone or in combination, depending on the patient’s needs and goals.

What is the recovery time after eyelid surgery?

The recovery time after a blepharoplasty surgery varies depending on the individual, the extent of the surgery, and the surgical technique used. After blepharoplasty surgery, patients can expect some discomfort, swelling, and bruising around the eyes. Cool compresses may be applied to reduce swelling and discomfort. During the first week, patients should rest and avoid strenuous activities that could cause dry eyes or increased bruising. Patients may resume light exercise by the second week, while swelling and bruising should subside. Most swelling should be gone by the third week, and patients can resume normal activities. Patients can typically return to their regular exercise routine by the fourth week.

When will I see my transformation?

After blepharoplasty, you will see initial improvements immediately, though swelling and bruising will be present. These symptoms will peak and then begin to subside to reveal more defined results. Over the next 1 to 2 months, your eyelids will continue to heal, and incision lines will fade. Final results become fully apparent within 3 to 6 months, showing a more youthful, refreshed appearance. With proper care, these results can be long-lasting and satisfying.

Will you be able to see my scars after surgery?

After blepharoplasty, the scars are typically minimal and well-concealed within the eyelids’ natural creases. Upper eyelid incisions are hidden in the fold of the eyelid, while lower eyelid incisions are often placed just below the lash line or inside the lower eyelid. Over time, these scars fade and become less noticeable. With proper care and following your surgeon’s post-operative instructions, any visible scarring should diminish significantly, leaving you with a more refreshed and youthful appearance.
