What is gynecomastia surgery?

‍Gynecomastia surgery, also known as male breast reduction surgery, is a surgical procedure to reduce the size of male breasts that have become enlarged due to gynecomastia. The surgery involves the removal of excess breast tissue, fat, and skin. There are two main techniques used for gynecomastia surgery: liposuction and excision. A combination of both of these techniques can be used to achieve your goals and reveal a flatter and more defined chest contour.

Who is a good candidate for gynecomastia surgery?

This procedure is ideal for men experiencing enlarged breast tissue, often due to hormonal imbalances, genetics, or certain medications. It is beneficial for those experiencing discomfort or self-consciousness due to their condition. Good candidates are in overall good health, non-smokers, and have a stable weight. Additionally, candidates should have realistic expectations about the outcomes and be committed to maintaining a healthy lifestyle post-surgery to sustain their results.

What is the recovery after gynecomastia surgery?

Immediately after the surgery, patients may experience some swelling, bruising, and discomfort. During this stage, they may be prescribed pain medication to manage their symptoms. Patients are typically advised to wear a compression garment for about 4 to 6 weeks after surgery. Strenuous activities and heavy lifting should be avoided for at least 4-6 weeks. Recovery from gynecomastia surgery typically involves a few days of rest, with most patients returning to work within 1-2 weeks.

When will I see my transformation?

The results of gynecomastia surgery are visible immediately after the procedure, although initial swelling may mask the final result. Over the following weeks, as the swelling diminishes, your chest’s new, flatter contour becomes more apparent. The final results will continue to improve over the following months as your body recovers. Results are long-lasting, especially if you maintain a stable weight and a healthy lifestyle. Achieving a firmer, more masculine look can significantly boost your self-confidence and improve your overall quality of life.

What are the causes of gynecomastia?

Gynecomastia is a condition in which breast tissue in males becomes enlarged. It can occur due to a variety of causes, including:

Hormonal changes: Gynecomastia is often caused by a hormonal imbalance between estrogen and testosterone. During puberty, hormone levels can fluctuate, causing temporary breast enlargement. In some cases, hormonal changes can occur later in life due to conditions such as hypogonadism, which is a condition in which the body doesn’t produce enough testosterone.

Medications: Certain medications can cause gynecomastia as a side effect. These may include certain antidepressants, antipsychotics, antibiotics, heart medications, and chemotherapy drugs.

Health conditions: Certain health conditions can cause gynecomastia, such as liver disease, kidney disease, and thyroid disorders. In some cases, gynecomastia may be a symptom of a more serious condition such as breast cancer.

Substance use: Use of certain substances, such as marijuana, anabolic steroids, and alcohol, can cause gynecomastia.

Genetics: In some cases, gynecomastia may be inherited or due to a genetic predisposition.

Weight gain: Excess weight can increase estrogen levels, which can cause breast tissue to grow.

Can gynecomastia go away with exercise?

Exercise alone is usually not enough to reduce the size of male breasts caused by gynecomastia. However, exercise may help reduce the overall amount of body fat, which can contribute to gynecomastia in some cases.

If the underlying cause of gynecomastia is hormonal, exercise is unlikely to reduce the size of male breasts. In these cases, medical treatment, such as hormone therapy or surgery, may be necessary to treat the condition. It’s important to consult with a healthcare provider to determine the underlying cause of gynecomastia and appropriate treatment options.
